What is this? Resident Evil 6 is now Call of Duty? Demo Impressions

I was really looking forward to the Resident Evil 6 demo I’ve been a long time RE fan (almost since day one). Now although I didn’t expect a huge leap forward based on what I saw in the previous released trailers,  I was still curious to see if it felt any different and also how the move and shoot mechanics would play out as well as  how the game came at me (presentation).

So it’s safe to say that I’m disappointed by the Resident Evil 6 demo, So disappointed in fact that I’m not sure if  I’m going to purchase anymore.

Where do I even start…oh yeah the “Call of Duty” thing, wait, let me describe the demo itself first. The demo has 3 parts to it, it’s like 3 demos in one (which is good) you play as Leon Kennedy in one part, Chris Redfield in another and Jake (I don’t know his last name) in yet another. Also the demo allows for  co-op with friends or other gamers (another good thing). Graphics are pretty darn good too — atleast the main characters.

Now the BAD:

How RE6 became Call of Duty

With that said here’s where it really went South. I get to Chris Redfield’s portion of the demo (Leon’s portion was bearable at this point) and that’s when Capcom introduced me, I met ‘over-the-top’, ‘out-of-control’ and their long distance cousin “is this even the-same-game’.  Redfield is leading a bunch of troops — military based and they’re gearing up to take on another military,  want to guess who this military you go up against are? Yep zombies!!! (oh I forgot are they even zombies anymore?) Really!!!? Zombies!!! What has Resident Evil come to? I thought the “zombie” shooting in RE5 was something now I’m in an all-out war! I’m running around in full military gear blasting zombies  btw who have military weapons of their own with tanks to boot and are shooting back at me with AK 47’s. I felt like I was playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare but instead of going to war against another country in Afghan consisting of other humans and attempting to secure the countries oil, I’m in Europe having an all-out war shooting the undead in the name of bio-terrorism. An it didn’t stop at trying to recreate COD…just as my co-op friend so adequately put it, they borrowed the monster from Resistance 2, too. Great! Now the “Great” Resident Evil is Call of Duty…as if the RE series hasn’t strayed enough.

Looks like Call of Duty doesn’t it

RE6 is so far and so wide from where it started that it honestly became a different game. The crazy thing about it is Capcom maybe Ok with that, it’s like they’re saying we need to compete with Call of Duty so why not put Call of Duty elements in our game.

But besides this RE6 really, really is showing it’s age I didn’t see any significant changes from a feel standpoint and even with the little changes they made putting it over an old engine doesn’t make it sastifying.

Here are some of the other things that caught my eye that I didn’t like:

Blur effects

I didn’t like the usage of the blur effect while your shooting. Every time you shoot it blurs the character your controlling. The blur is so powerful you can’t see any details of your character. It’s almost like I’m playing a First Person Shooter, I don’t know if this was Capcom’s attempt yet again to compete with Call of Duty and make us feel like we’re playing a FPS zombie game.

Still Clunky – Outdated

With all the talk of the moving and shooting aspect (which is not that dynamic) this game really still feels clunky and outdated. There was nothing significant added from a feel stand point — the clunky 180 degree turn is still there, camera is all over the place — I spent most of my time fighting the camera, the characters have no real sense of weight to them, posting up on the wall for cover is as awkward as ever and character animations when they walk and move doesn’ t feel as realistic as it should be. The little changes they did make such as the aformentioned being able to move and shoot, being able to shoot while laying on the ground and rolling still felt like new changes on an old engine, therefore giving the affect of trying to put perfume on musk.

Zombies melting

Zombies melting after you kill them always was a pet peeve for me I don’t know how realistic of an expectation changing that would of been though,  I’m just saying.

I should of saw this coming

The sad thing is I knew it was going to play alot like RE5 — which is not good  in terms of growth and bringing it back to it’s roots. But if you take it for what it is and not what it’s suppose to be it’s a pretty good game so I still was going to get it but when a Survival Horror — Classic mind you, becomes Call of Duty that’s when I have to say my beloved franchise is no more.

A Sad day in Gaming

Today is a sad day in gaming…when one of my favorite franchises, (Resident Evil 2 specifically) the game that made me aware I was a gamer for life strays this far (if they continue to go in this direction) I will have to permantly let it go and officially move on from RE as a franchise…sad indeed.

What are your thoughts on the Demo? What are your thoughts in general? Do you share my same sentiments or disagree? CCU wants to hear from you.

  1. I dont really know what this website is, so i’m not sure if ur getting paid for this but if you are this is pathetic. you are basing your criticism on things that anyone who played 4-5 would understand. its almost as if this was the first RE game u played and ur comments are based off angry nerds who are saying how much better the first 3 were. So ill go point by point:

    1. like COD: well no its not at all, more like gears of war if anything due to the cover mechanic. the “zombies” arent zombies but people infected with an improved plagas parasite (the one from 4-5) which doesnt make them brainless but just controlled by this parasite. and in 4-5 there were guns too, now that the virus has been improved more of them can use guns… its all in the story if u care to listen. the real “zombies” are the ones leon fights in the demo, those are infected by the original virus.

    2. looks like cod? hell no it looks much better than that shit cod engine was using since cod4. re5 looked great and this looks slightly better… i dont know if uve only been playing games like BF3 on pc so u think all other games look bad, but for this generation the graphics look great.

    3. seeing as i didnt even notice any blur effect i can see u are over exaggeration to try and make a moot point. “its like cod” in what fucking way? please elaborate

    4. why are you complaining about the old engine… its an re game ur not supposed to have movement like u would in assassins creed or something then it would be too easy. the 180 move isnt clunky u press back and A i think and he turns around its simple and its been used in the past 2 games as well. i also dont understand why u are fighting the camera, it took me like 2 minutes to understand it… u basically control the camera as you move thats all, same as in all 3rd person games recently. the only thing i agree with you is the cover system, it feels off but it doesnt ruin the game nor does it piss me off in any way like it seems to piss you off.

    5. the zombies melting also has to do with the new type of virus that is infecting them, the story in re5 covered that…

    6. the game is still “survival” in the sense that you arent given a lot of ammo (other than the chris campaign but it makes sense since hes a soldier with an outfit, they wouldnt go to war with 2 clips) and leon was only given a lot of ammo because its the demo, if u watch gameplay thats online now u can see they have less ammo… even chris has less. you also lose more health when hit when not playing on the easy demo difficulty. its not scary, but hell neither are the first 3 if u go back and play them now.

    7. you should just let the game go because for someone who is such a fan you dont seem to know the slightest thing about the story and you would know that the gameplay mechanic introduced in RE4 is much better than the past 3. the only reason you dont like it is because the game isnt scary anymore, but dont forget its still a survival “action” game.

  2. exactly the same feeling for me.
When playing the demo for the first time with a friend, I told him during Chris campaign “he guy, it looks like gears of war ???”

  3. After reading the main article and the two comments that followed here are my thoughts: I have played every main game in the RE series except 4 (I only played the first stage of four). I loved all the ones I played, and with that being said I can agree with the thoughts on this game attempting to be something like COD, but only in the way of competing. It is still a bit of a chore to move in RE 6. All the games were kind of cursed by this mechanic. There is sort of this forced path to walk on in the first three…then in four they changed it where you could move in all directions. In my case ill take the good with the bad.
I didn’t agree with them going with the parasite thing, but in Capcom’s defense at the time people were screaming “Hey why is it only zombies!” so they changed it. I personally think they should have stayed with Zombies and altered them to move faster than other or have different abilities.
The Ammo is Waaaaaaayyyyyy to plentiful. I don’t care if a guy has three clips….in the past three REs (4 thru 6) I never felt the urge to conserve ammo. I always felt like well ill find some soon. On top of that in RE 6 you have those nifty action moves on command so hell who even needs ammo for regular baddies LOL. Just conserve that for the Boss battles.
In the end I think the main idea of the topic is true RE has changed a whole hell of a lot since it first appeared. I wouldn’t dare call it survival anything, but I would still call it fun. I might just be a fan boy though LOL. I think some good points were made though. DEAD SPACE is ten times scarier than RE is these days, but like I said still a fun shooter now.
