This is why the Call of Duty franchise and the Wii console is so important to gaming

Call of Duty franchise — the biggest selling of all-time, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 — biggest first week of all-time (775 million).

The Wii Console — 89 million sold — the biggest selling console in this generation. But the numbers are not what makes it so important.

IT’S THE NUMBERS THAT MAKE IT SO IMPORTANT! Let me explain. It’s not the fact of how many games it sold necessarily, or that they’re number one in their respective genre, it’s who represents those numbers and how those numbers translate. We’ve all seen games do major numbers before, but in most cases it  just spoke to who it needed to speak to — gamers! Now with Call of Duty and the Wii — especially the Wii, the exposure that it  brings to gaming is unparallel.

The Video Game Industry is becoming the biggest form of entertainment even over movies and the almighty music genre. In the case of Call of Duty, USA Today even reported that the game is now compared or even surpassing movie performance.

Here’s a quote from USA Today:

“The record-breaking sales assault of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 — more than $775 million in its first five days in stores — is propelling the video game franchise to heights on par with the biggest entertainment brands of all time, including Harry Potter an                      Star Wars.”

It further goes on to say:

“This is the third year in a row that the latest installment of the first-person combat game franchise has set a five-day entertainment sales record, surpassing movies, books and other games.”

And everybody on the planet knows what the Wii is — Lmbo (laughing my but off). Everyone from infants to grandmas, to soccer moms to thugs, to grown men and grown women, everyone has at least heard about the console if not own 1 or 2 themselves.

So what does this mean? It means ladies and gentleman that video games — your favorite hobby and the reason you get out of bed in the morning — might I add — this my friends — has penetrated pop culture, and is the reason why you can now be taking seriously and the reason you don’t have to be afraid to say, “I’M A GAMER!!!” This is good news for everybody involved. Developers receive more money toward their projects to make the games they envisioned, more original IP will surface and ah yes, us gamers get to sit back and enjoy  the best in gaming, month in and month out.

You see, the fact that video games can be respected as an art form in the same vein as music, books and film is a huge accomplishment. The Educational system is now even fully supporting the art form, where you can take classes to become a Game Developer, or Game Programmer — which would’ve never been the case years ago.

Love it or hate it, we need to be grateful and get together and say thank you Call of Duty, thank you Nintendo Wii, you’ve made the thing that I love more revelant then ever.

What do you think? CCwants to hear from you?
