Microsoft Announces Xbox One Price Drop

Today Microsoft announced that they will be offering a price drop in the near future for their fairly new next-gen console Xbox One.

Starting June 9th the system will be available for $399.99, which will now put the console on an even playing field (price wise) as the PS4 however this new price point does not include the Kinect.  Microsoft will continue to offer the $499.99 sku which does include the Kinect.

Phil Spencer, head of  Microsoft’s Xbox division indicated that though they are now offering a Kinect-less Xbox One option —  a option brought on by the gaming community according to him, still value the Kinect and says still remain an important part of their plans. Here’s the quote:

“We’ve heard that you want more choices from Xbox One. You want a wide variety of options in your games and entertainment experiences and you also want options in your hardware selection, “To be clear, as we introduce this new Xbox One console option, Kinect remains an important part of our vision.”

Keep in mind there are no current Kinect stand alone sku’s so if you buy the $399 option and decide later you want the Kinect you may have to wait until at least the Fall. Microsoft has announced their plans to release standalone Kinect’s however no exact date or price was committed to.

What is also interesting through this announcement and brings up a obvious question is, how developers will move forward when creating games? Will they be hesitant to take advantage of Kinect features knowing now it is no longer standard for every Xbox One Console?

Is Microsoft’s Announcement of a lower-priced Kinect-less console great news? CCU wants to hear from you.
