If you were stranded on a island and you could only take one game…one console…one controller…one HDTV…

What would you take with you? Also explain why you chose that game/console/controller/hdtv  above all the others. Hold on though, before you answer that, there are rules, I wanted to make this a little bit more interesting.

Before I get to the rules I will share the basis of me writing this. I was conversing with fellow gamers about 2011 in gaming and because people arguably felt 2011 was one of the best years ever, I started to think which of these games would people choose if their back was against the wall and had to make a tough decision. I wanted to do all-time (which will be explained in the rules) and I may still do in a future article, but I decided to go a different route. Coupled with the fact that I couldn’t come to my own conclusion on what I would choose on this day I knew it would make for some interesting talk.

Here are the rules:

  • Your stranded and are alone
  • Only 2011 is what you have to choose from in regards to what game to take
  • You will have the  basic setup for your gaming needs  so that means wi-fi and internet hard wire are available — even if you don’t have these things though, they will be at your disposal
  • Limited friends – if your choosing your game with the intent to go online and play with friends, you can do so, but only with “real-world” friends so if they don’t jump online as much as your virtual friends you might want to consider that
  • When it comes to system/controller/HDTV — this generation only
  • When choosing a system Only systems that are currently on the market and are consoles, so  PS3Xbox 360, and Wii are your choices sorry no Wii-U, no handhelds and no PC
  • Your gaming setup is all you have for entertainment, meaning no TV, no laptop, no computer and no phone
  • When it comes to your HDTV choice you can choose the brand but you can only have one “super feature”, all the other features will be low end, so will you choose 3D, the hertz, the size, or the resolution? So for example if you choose 3D, the hertz will be 60, the size will be 30 inches and the resolution will be 720p and so on and so forth

To help you out in the game department just in case you forgot about what 2011 outputted, I took the liberty to compile a list for you — even though if we’re talking about an island and one game of your choice, it’s probably going to  mean you really love this game, which  means it’s probably already in your library, which means all you probably have to do is look in your own video game library, but here’s the list anyway.

  •  Dead Space 2 - Many are regarding this game and series as the best in the  horror genre gaming has to offer at this moment
  • Portal 2 (Game of the Year Nominee) –  Maybe the best puzzle game of all time — gamers were attracted to it’s  charm and absolute humor
  • Mortal Kombat - Agh, one of the top two definitive fighters in gaming history returned to it’s roots, prettier, more expansive and more enjoyable than ever
  • LA NOIRE - A Rockstar assisted title featuring Revolutionary Technology — I think all games going forward should feature or at least expand on the facial animation displayed in that game
  • Fight Night Champion - Revolutionized the boxing genre with adding story elements,  the days of just two fighters randomly playing a game was brought to an end
  • Killzone 3 -  Still one of the definitive games in terms of  graphics — and some gamers favorite FPS (First Person Shooter)
  • Marvel vs Capcom 3 - It may not have been received in the way it hoped (esp. by fighting purists), but still in midst of the comeback and surge of the fighting game genre it adds a nice piece to the puzzle — a fun game nonetheless
  • Infamous 2 - Batman is Batman but let’s not forget Cole MacGrath,  who is carving his own following  and making a name for himself  in the superhero genre
  • Resistance 3 - Not putting up the big numbers sales wise it probably would hope to, but Insomniac still received — for the most part — high critical praise of it’s 3rd installment
  • Gears of War 3 - Microsoft’s flagship title and it’s role in revolutionizing the 3rd person action/adventure genre  can not go overlooked
  • Dark Souls - No doubt people love this game, it’s your classic “underground classic” and the game is haaaaaarrdddd! Probably the hardest game you’ll play in terms of degree of difficulty in this new era of gaming — you want old school? Well there it is
  •  MotorStorm: Apocalypse - A thrilling take on driving while the world is ending and collapsing in front of you and on you
  •  Batman: Arkham City ( Game of the Year Nominee)- The Batman returns better in every way gameplay, gadgets, graphics oh my!
  •  Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (Game of the Year Nominee) - Sony’s flagship title and another amazing adventure under Naughty Dog’s belt, after a almost  4 million copies sold, day one debut, it seems the sales may finally match the quality in it’s 3rd installment
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - After selling a ga-zillion copies in it’s first week gamers have shown that this is still the FPS to beat and what gamers ultimately want to spend their most time with
  •  Battlefield 3 - All the talk  and hype surrounding the game was that it would finally take down Call of Duty as the number one FPS in gamers hearts and their engine – Frostbite 2 which set a new bar in graphics and  technology “ANT” which allow the game to showcase some of the most realistic animations ever seen in gaming, The latter suceeded, the former, not so much
  •  Rage - The hype surrounding this game was Graphics Graphics Graphics!!! Gamers doubted whether a multi-platform title had the capability to pull off the graphics that would sit amongst the best seen thus far, whether it did or not is a bit of a wash, but you decide
  •  The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Game of the Year Nominee) - Nintendo’s one of many, many  flagship titles just retired as the first game in the Video Game Hall of Fame and impressive 25 year run is something that garners respect and the word “legend” associated with the games title holds even more weight now
  • Forza MotorSport 4  - The Definitive Racer on the Xbox and Gran Turismo’s  closest competition, it had a quiet release but still was welcomed with critical acclaim —  91/100 in Metacritic
  •  Assassin’s Creed: Revelations -  The excitement for this title seemed to die down a bit possibly due to a plethora  of other titles releasing around the same time, but the series definitely has a cult following
  • The Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim (Game of  the Year Winner) - Speaking of Cult followings, this title, which may have been considered an “underground title” is now propelled into national spotlight and won Game of the Year at the Spike VGA’s — Nuff Said

So now that you have your rules, your guidelines and a list to refer to let’s hear those answers. CCU wants to hear from you.

  1. Based on the choices/options presented to me I would have to garner the award of my most prized island title to Gears of War 3, considering the online compatibility and friends galore who play it. I would need resolution over anything else, personally nothing beats being able to see whats going on perfectly in my book. I would want some high quality head phones if that’s possible, it’s kind of imperative to forget where I’m at given the situation, otherwise the enjoyability of playing is lost through obvious island stress.

The lasting enjoyment of the games online experience would no doubt prove priceless in a world where entertainment and survival are a lot more synonymous.
