I know we said this about 2011 but will 2013 be the best year in gaming?

After the year we had in 2011 I think gamers were expecting to have an even bigger year in 2012…well 2012 arrived and seemingly did not deliver. I think some of that had to do with games that were expected to release being pushed into 2013 and the games that were actually published not living up to standard. Now it seems 2013 will be an overcrowded bliss which may propel 2013 to be the biggest, best year ever, so if this is indeed the final year for current-gen consoles what a way to go.

It’s such a perfect blend of sequels, prequels, reboots, and new IP’s which may make it the most balanced year ever too. With games like Tomb Raider (reboot/prequel), Watch Dogs (new IP), God of War: Ascension (prequel), The Last of Us (new IP), Splinter Cell: Blacklist (sequel/REBOOT), Grand Theft Auto V (sequel), Beyond: Two Souls (new IP) and  Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (sequel or prequel– lmbo — I want all of these games by the way) the diversity shines big.

Impressive list right? Yep, it almost got me too, ‘LIST you almost had me!’ I was tempted to get hyped and already give it the crown before even one of these games got released but 3 things have to happen: ONE, it has to come out seems simple enough, you laughing but it’s true, (no guarantees there) see The Last Guardian, TWO, it has to deliver on the hype, and THREE, said deliverance has to be better than any year previous duh!

Let’s go back to 2011 for a second shall we? That year yielded games like Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Battlefield 3, Gears of War 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Dead Space 2, Portal 2 , Assassin’s Creed 2, (the year of the sequels huh?), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (GOTY), Forza Motorsport 4, Batman: Arkham  City, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Fight Night Champion and  Mortal Kombat. Looks good on paper doesn’t it? Looks great even, as does 2013, but I remember in the beginning of the year wanting like ten sure fire games and at the end of the year only wanting like four lets look at some of the games on the list a little closer:

KZ3 – I don’t feel was supported and loved as the hype suggested, there’s some sort of disconnect between the excitement of Killzone and the attachment rate of Killzone

Resistance 3 — the same could be said (see KZ3) I feel no one cares about the franchise anymore however…including the developers, Insomniac, which don’t seem to lose sleep over it, oh thee irony

Battlefield 3 – Dice’s whole ploy was to take out Call of Duty and become the number one undisputed FPS, now although I hear it’s a good game I believe the ploy — an unsuccessful ploy at that, overshadowed it…gamers are not yet ready to let go of their precious — COD

Gears of War 3 – another game where it seems the fan base and interest is withering little by little, not even nominated for Game of the Year and with the announcement of Cliff Bleszinski’s departure who knows what the future holds

Dead Space 2 – I feel failed to rock the world and become the undisputed Survival Horror game everyone was expecting even though technically their was no competition, in fact criticism was shared in the fashion that doomed the last undisputed crown holder — Resident Evil, which is that it’s becoming more action less horror

Uncharted 3 – Even the great UC3 was looked at with a funny-eye suggesting the franchise took a step backwards from the much heralded Uncharted 2 in Naughty Dogs’ latest efforts

So you see when we look a little a closer at 2011 it may not have been as amazing as we thought or think. So a very promising 2013? Yes! But a 2013 that has to be played out — literally — nonetheless.

Things that can hurt its standing? Momentum, that’s what. What’s interesting is I see a lot of monsters (as I call them) bunched up in the first half of the year but not so much the second half, so right now it’s shaping up on paper to be the the best first half of the year ever, (LMBO) but it has to maintain throughout the year. The thing with games is there are years where the first half can be amazing and the second half not so much or the first half not so much and second half of the year amazing but wheres the cohesion?

Oh, then it’s the mighty huge electronic – hardware elephant in the room regarding when next-gen consoles will be released. But if this year delivers; giving us superb quality and quantity and then finish the year with new consoles on the market — which could actually fill the vacancy (and maybe the reason there’s a vacancy in the first place) of no games being announced,  maaannnn! What a year indeed it will be. Even if you loved 2011 you have to admit it would be tough to argue for.

That is an impressive list for both years but what year from the two do you think will be the best? Do you think 2013 will live up to the hype or do you think it will flash on paper sort of like 2011; over promise and then under-deliver? CCU wants to hear from you.
